Call of Duty has been one of the most successful video game franchises in history. It shaped multiplayer and competitive shooters over two decades. Recently, players, though, have left it behind, and new buyers aren’t stepping up. Games Industry.Biz reported that as of December 11, only 401,000 were sold compared to 2.3 million for Black Ops 6.

The release of the newest installment, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, reignited debate among fans and critics about whether the series is finally running out of ammo. Many fans did buy the game for its history, but then came the disappointment and frustration.

Fans argue that Black Ops 7 feels like a recycled product rather than a bold step forward. “Like, I really liked the older games because they were different and fun. But honestly, ever since Black Ops 4, it’s been the same stuff over and over again,” said  Marus Shelb. The 35-year-old has been playing since Call of Duty 5. “Like bro, I don’t know why people are still buying this,” he said.

Critics and fans describe recent Call of Duty titles as repetitive, and they say the games rely on nostalgia. Even content creators like InkTV, a YouTuber with over 75 thousand subscribers, talk about how yearly releases have caused burnout among longtime players. The video argues that players don’t expect new content but the same gameplay with minor updates.

Fans complain there is too much emphasis on selling extras like battle passes and character cosmetics. They think that Treyarch and Raven Software, the creators, should have emphasized gameplay improvements more than game decals.

Content creators talk about the technical problems and rushed launch that have damaged the game’s reputation. In a video called “What Went WRONG With Black Ops 7?”, they out bugs, weapon imbalances and inconsistent updates that hurt competitive players. “From a competitive standpoint, Black Ops 7 is one of the most unbalanced launches I’ve seen in years,” said Farhan Mazahar, a 23-year-old who has played competitive Call of Duty for over eight years. “All of that literally makes me want to uninstall it,” he said.

On the page for reviews of Black Ops 7 on the site  Steam Store,  players complain about the use of AI making the game “soulless and unplayable.”If Call of Duty hopes to regain its former glory, it may need to stop playing it safe and take real creative risks, before players finally log off for good.
