Two City College of New York students, a recent graduate, and the online publication Harlem View are finalists in the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Awards in the Northeast Region for their work during 2022. Winners will be named on April 22, 2023.

Craig Hunter and Gary Hilborn are finalists in the online feature video category.  Maricela Niola is a finalist in the online news video category and Harlem View Managing Editor Susan Thorson and Assistant Managing Editor Jennifer Garcia are finalists in the best Online Independent Publication category.

Hunter covered the 2022 graduation of advertising executive Kirk McDonald, who returned to City College to get his degree after more than 30 years. Hilborn received honors for a story about a Harlem group that helps LGBT elders.  Maricela Niola reported about Latinx street vendors in Brooklyn trying survive in a shaky post-pandemic economy.

City College is the only CUNY undergraduate school to place finalists in the prestigious competition. Schools including Harvard, Columbia, Yale, Syracuse, the Craig Newmark School of Journalism at CUNY, NYU, Boston University, University of Pennsylvania and other northeastern schools had entries in the contest.

Harlem View was a finalist in 2021 in the best Online Independent Publication Category.
