With one minute on the clock, junior midfielder Sara Rodriguez of CCNY broke a scoreless tie. The City College of New York women’s soccer team won a hard-fought game on Wednesday, October 22nd, against Lehman College by a score of 1-0.
“I just never put my head down. I always thought, that the goal was coming”, Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez took 12 shots, 10 shots on target, and made her first goal of the season at the 89th minute. That led CCNY to their second win in the CUNYAC conference.
With this win, CCNY extends their overall record to 3-7-2, and 2-1-0 in CUNYAC play.
Mackenzie Moreno, assistant coach said, “They went out there and just fought hard till the last minute”.
CCNY dominated the game from the first half with 11 shots and a strong hold on their defense line.
Lehman struggled to mount an attack. Freshman midfielder Brissa Belmont had 1 shot at the 26th minute, but Senior Goalkeeper Laila Issa of CCNY saved it.
After halftime, CCNY kept up their attack and made 17 shots, bringing it to a total of 28 shots overall, 18 on target.
“They kept digging, digging, and we came out with that win”, Yanique Newman, Head Coach of the Women’s Soccer Team said.
Lennon Leithauser, junior, and one of the captains of the women’s soccer team, said, “We just needed to play the ball more simple, take simpler shots, and play the way we play”.
