After losing three straight games to three of the top overall teams in conference, CCNY’s men volleyball team was finally able put a stop to the bleed and end their losing streak. This came Thursday evening when they defeated Brooklyn College in three straight sets 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-20). CCNY now ranks 7-3 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
Junior Jeffrey Celis led the team with 10 kills for the entire game. Freshman David Galvez had 26 assists while teammate Tenzin Tsepak also contributed six blocks throughout the game. The teamwork paid off and the team hugged and high fived after the game.
CCNY showed improvement in strategy. They paid more attention to defense. They focused and seemed energized for the entire game and played all out.
“We tried to place that team like we were at any other team, even the top teams,” said David Galvez, CCNY’s setter. “We try to focus on serving and sort of receive which is without that we don’t have anything else.”
The team also paid attention to teamwork. Players said the lack of communication was the reason for their recent losing streak. “I think we were moving more together better,” said Galvez. “We communicated more, and we also had a better energy prior to the game.”
Looking forward, the team wants to start out stronger. “I would say to start strong from the beginning, no matter what the team is because if we start down, it’s hard to come back up,” Galvez said. The team started out with wins at the beginning of the season, then slumped, and now they hope to go back to their winning ways for good.
