A curse seems to hang over The City College of New York (CCNY) men’s soccer team. The Beavers are on an eight-game losing streak and have yet to win a road game. As a result, they will have a difficult time getting into the CUNYAC Championship Series. The team has had an eight-year drought since it won the championship.

Student-athletes wonder why the team continues to lose. Michael Torres, the starting goalkeeper of the soccer team takes an overview of the team from his position. “The team is not taking enough shots, especially the strikers. We never have more shots on goal than the opposition in any of our games.” The Beavers are 9-60 to opponents in goal contribution and 79-341 in total shots taken, according to the CCNY Athletics Department statistics.

At the game against the Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn’s Aviator Sports Complex, the Beavers showed promise and took more shots on goal than Medgar Evers, which ended in their first draw, 2-2. Jared Tepale, a freshman midfielder talked about the game and the team’s struggle. “The issue in this team is the lack of focus from our key players. The lack of taking responsibility for being a college athlete. We lack positivity and point fingers on the mistakes we make,” he said.

Sebastian Bush, Assistant Director of Athletics for Communications & Sports Information said, “The issue is there’s no chemistry between players as the majority of the players on the team are freshmen. Only 7 starters from last season. The squad needs more time for younger players to develop and experience together to get comfortable.”

The beavers are in 6th place in the CUNYAC standings and will face off against Hunter College on Wednesday, Oct. 18, at Randall’s Field 10.
