Expelled!

HARLEM, February 7

The City College of New York has expelled Din Bajrektarevic, the student who allegedly threatened to “shoot up” the campus in November. Celia Lloyd, the vice president of student affairs, announced Bajrektarevic’s expulsion early Tuesday evening in an email blast informing the campus community that he is not allowed to return to City College or any other CUNY campus. The day before this email was sent, Harlem View asked her to confirm his expulsion. She did not respond to us.

At the end of January, Harlem View learned that the Faculty-Student Disciplinary Committee voted to expel Bajrektarevic in December. The expulsion followed a disciplinary hearing, which a source who knows him said he did not attend. Top administrators were notified of the expulsion nearly two months ago, and Bajektarevic was informed of the decision on December 14. They did not inform the campus community immediately.

On January 19, City College spokesman Jay Mwamba told Harlem View that the college could not reveal if Bajrektarevic was allowed on campus because of “an active/ongoing investigation.” This was the last time he responded to our requests for comment.

Even though Bajarektarevick was expelled, his court case is ongoing. He was arrested on November 25 and charged with aggravated harassment in the second degree as a hate crime, harassment in the first degree as a hate crime, and aggravated harassment in the second degree. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 13.

Harlem View submitted a Freedom of Information Law request for documents related to Bajrektarevic’s disciplinary hearing because the college has not responded to our many requests for comment.
